Adding to the haunting atmosphere are the tens of thousands of flamingos that call the Skeleton Coast home. These majestic birds, adorned with flaming red feathers, feed their offspring with a bright red nutrient solution, seemingly intensifying the eerie ambiance.
However, scientific research has revealed that the "blood" they provide is not actually blood but a unique nutrient solution. Flamingos break down seaweed, shrimp, clams, insects, and other food sources into a red nutrient-rich liquid, containing hemoglobin, which gives it a crimson appearance.
From this perspective, the presence of the flamingos adds a touch of vibrancy to the otherwise desolate coast.
The Skeleton Coast earned its name primarily due to the vast number of shipwrecks dotting the nearby waters. Several factors contribute to these maritime disasters. Heavy fog engulfs the area, reducing visibility and making navigation treacherous.
The coastline itself is lined with reefs, some of which possess tumultuous and dark currents. During the winter months, strong winds brought by the westerly wind belt increase the likelihood of shipwrecks.
Furthermore, the deserts that stretch along the coast are plagued by extreme drought, leading to severe water and food shortages. The crews onboard the ships often struggle to obtain the necessary supplies for survival.
Given its location on the route from Europe to Asia, the Skeleton Coast witnesses a significant number of ships passing through its perilous waters.
Rain is a rarity throughout the year, and the relentless drought adds to the harshness of the environment. The wind, known as "Suupawa" to the Namibian Bushmen hunters, blows fiercely from the south, carrying sand particles that collide with one another, creating a ghostly roar as the surface of the dunes collapses downward.
The region is situated in the low-latitude Atlantic Ocean along the east coast of the southern hemisphere, experiencing strong evaporation and high water vapor content. As the offshore winds interact with the cold seawater, a Benguela cold current develops along the coast, causing the water vapor to condense into dense fog.
The combination of sinking airflow and the presence of fog creates a "fog lock coast" phenomenon, resulting in extremely low visibility.
The Skeleton Coast of Namibia is fraught with dangers, such as powerful currents, forceful winds reaching up to level 8 on the Beaufort scale, disorienting foggy seas, and treacherous underwater reefs.
These hazardous conditions have led to numerous shipwrecks, defining the essence of the Skeleton Coast. To this day, the ochre-colored dunes, formed by the mesmerizing mirage phenomenon, remain one of the most unique and captivating sights in the world.
